Fusion startup Inertia Enterprises said it has found a way to cut the time it takes to make its fuel pellets from several days to just minutes. By slashing fuel filling time, Inertia says it has knocked down one of the 10 barriers it must overcome to deliver the first phase of its commercial power plant ambitions. The startup gave TechCrunch an exclusive first look at the process.
The advance wasn't guaranteed. Investors gave Inertia $450 million on the premise that it could commercialize technology developed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), an elaborate science experiment that requires painstaking care and feeding. At NIF, making fuel pellets can take a week or more and cost a small fortune — not a great recipe for a profitable operation.
Why It Matters
The NIF fuel pellet is far from an iPhone. The outside is a spherical diamond shell; just inside sits a thin layer of frozen deuterium and tritium — the isotopes of hydrogen that fuel a fusion reactor — and inside that crystalline layer, a mix of gaseous deuterium and tritium. Each solid layer must be as close to perfectly spherical as possible. The pellets are wrapped in gold casings known as hohlraums, which convert laser energy into X-rays to compress the fuel. Even small imperfections can disrupt ignition.
Co-founder and CEO Jeff Lawson frames the NIF process as prototypes: "They're only making a handful of them a year... I put on my commercial hat and was like, wait a minute, I know the word for this: Prototypes." So Inertia is hiring industrial engineers — "from the likes of Apple," Lawson said — to figure out how to manufacture those prototypes a billion times over in a factory.

The AI angle is secondary here, but the pattern is familiar to anyone watching hardware moonshots: the breakthrough that unlocks an industry isn't the physics — it's manufacturing. Fusion's hard problem was never just ignition; it was making fuel cheaply and reliably enough to run a grid.
Inertia is betting that industrial engineering, not lab care, is what closes the gap between a proof-of-concept and a commercial plant. It's a reminder that in capital-intensive fields, the companies that win often are the ones that industrialize first, not the ones that demonstrate the science first. If Inertia's fuel-filling speedup holds, it's a meaningful step from science experiment toward something that can actually be priced.
