Starcloud Raises $250M More for Orbital AI Data Centers
The space-compute startup is betting on Starship — and racing the end of the Falcon 9 era

The story
Starcloud, a startup building satellites that perform AI inference in orbit, has added a $250 million extension to its March $170 million Series A, valuing the company at $2.3 billion. The round was led by Manhattan West Ventures with participation from Nvidia and Cisco — Nvidia reportedly put in $25 million — plus Benchmark, EQT, Soma, NFX, 776, Cedar Capital, Goanna Capital, and Standard Capital.
The capital funds a larger manufacturing facility and Starcloud-3, its largest orbital data center spacecraft, designed to fly on SpaceX's upcoming Starship rocket. Starcloud has already asked the FCC for permission to operate 88,000 spacecraft, and CEO Philip Johnston is stockpiling capital to secure launch capacity as the market tightens.
The analysis
The core tension is launch logistics. Launch costs were already the biggest challenge for orbital data center startups — one competitor has decided to build its own rockets. Now SpaceX plans to phase out its workhorse Falcon 9 by 2028, and bringing the larger but still unproven Starship online is proving slow. Blue Origin's New Glenn and ULA's Vulcan aren't flying regularly, and Rocket Lab's Neutron isn't on the pad yet. This week Elon Musk said SpaceX would delay an attempt to catch a returning Starship for a few months, aiming to re-fly it by late 2026 or early 2027.
Johnston is candid: "Obviously if we can't book any SpaceX launch capacity in 2029, that will be challenging for us." Near-term, Starcloud plans to launch two new 8 kW compute satellites (Starcloud-2) on rideshare flights in 2027 for orbital inference tasks, including for U.S. government agencies. It's weighing a dedicated Falcon 9 launch and contracts with other providers.
The analysis
The Nvidia stake is the signal to watch. Starcloud says it's the only company currently operating an Nvidia H100 terrestrial data-center GPU in orbit, and the first to train a model on it — most space GPUs are edge-processing chips. Starcloud is feeding that experience back to Nvidia as the chipmaker develops its first purpose-built space GPU, the Vera Rubin Space-1, which Starcloud hopes to fly in late 2028.
Two open questions define the thesis. First, can Starship actually deliver the cost-per-kilo drop needed for an orbital inference layer to compete with terrestrial data centers? Second, does the physics work — heat dissipation, radiation shielding, surviving a rocket launch — at scale? Starcloud is a bold bet on "yes" to both, backed by $420 million in a single year and an FCC request for 88,000 satellites. If Starship slips, so does Starcloud's timeline — and its valuation.
