Article 291: Anthropic's Junior Technical Hiring Fell From 27% to 9%
Anthropic has published internal workforce data on how agents are changing its own engineering. Since early 2025, junior staff fell from 21% to 14% of its technical departments, and juniors' share of technical hires dropped from 27% to 9%. By August, interactive AI agents were logging six times as many hours as the employees directing them, and code commits per engineer were five times their level of six months earlier. About 80% of interactive Claude session time is spent waiting for a human to respond.
Key Takeaway: The headline is the hiring collapse, but the 80% figure is the more interesting one. Six hours of agent time per human hour, and four fifths of the human's time is spent waiting to reply - that is not automation removing work, it is automation relocating it into supervision. A lab that needs fewer juniors to write code but the same seniors to approve it has not solved the bottleneck. It has moved it somewhere that does not show up in commit counts, and into a role that nobody has yet described, priced, or trained anyone for. The honest reading of this dataset is that entry-level engineering work is being absorbed before anyone has decided what entry-level engineering work is now for.
