Qualcomm's New Snapdragon Chips Push On-Device AI Agents and Local Models

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Extreme variant bring a 200M-parameter sensing hub and a 30B-parameter on-device MoE model — a play for phone-native AI agents.

The Update

At its annual Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm announced two flagship smartphone processors — the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the higher-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 — built around AI. The chips include new sensing hubs that can run small models up to 200 million parameters, enabling a personal "scribe" that runs locally and can differentiate between speakers, along with usage-based memory for automating tasks. Qualcomm says the chips can run a complete voice-in/voice-out agent on-device.

The Extreme variant adds an accelerator designed for efficient model execution and can run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally — where only a subset of parameters activates per task. For comparison, Apple's third-generation foundation models topped out at a 20-billion-parameter MoE model at WWDC in June. Beyond AI, both chips upgrade cameras with pixel-level control, stabilization, and motion understanding, with the Extreme supporting 8K60 video and 4K240 slow-motion.

Why This Matters

The emphasis on local model execution is a quiet but important shift. Running a 30B MoE model on a phone means meaningful AI capability — including agents that can hold a conversation and act — without sending data to the cloud for every interaction. That has privacy and latency benefits, and it shifts the competitive battleground: the device, not just the data center, becomes a place where models run.

The agent framing is the bigger point. A sensing hub that remembers usage and a fully on-device voice agent are the hardware requirements for "always-available" personal AI that doesn't depend on a network connection. Qualcomm is betting that the next smartphone cycle is won on who can host the most capable local agent.

The Constraints

On-device 30B parameter models are impressive but bounded. A mixture-of-experts model activates only part of its weights per task, which is clever for efficiency, but it is still a fraction of what runs in the cloud. The result will likely be a hybrid: lightweight, private agents on-device, with heavier lifting handed off. The chip enables the story, but the real question is whether developers and phone makers build agent experiences that actually take advantage of the on-device capacity — or whether it stays a spec-sheet talking point.
