The Update
Snorkel AI, a startup that helps AI labs and corporations build training datasets and simulated environments, has tripled its valuation to nearly $3.5 billion. The new round, led by Insight Partners and S32, values the seven-year-old company at almost triple the $1.3 billion it commanded when it raised $100 million in a Series D about 17 months ago. Existing investors — including Addition, Lightspeed, Greylock, GV, and Wells Fargo — also participated.
Snorkel originally sold software for data-labeling automation but shifted last year to providing customers with completed datasets, an offering it calls data-as-a-service. Rather than operating purely as a human expert marketplace, it uses a hybrid approach: generating data synthetically with its software and models alongside subject matter experts. Snorkel says its current annualized revenue run rate is $375 million — an eighteenfold increase over the last 12 months.
Other data companies positioning themselves as AI data labs have seen similar explosion. Mercor's gross annualized revenue has climbed to $2 billion, Handshake hit the $1 billion milestone earlier this year, and Micro1 has scaled to $500 million.
Why This Matters
This is the clearest signal yet that the bottleneck in AI is no longer compute alone — it's data. As frontier models exhaust public web text, the scarcity moves to high-quality, domain-specific, and synthetic training data. Snorkel's 18x revenue surge in a year quantifies just how acutely AI labs feel that pinch, and how willing they are to pay for finished datasets rather than build labeling pipelines themselves.
The valuation jump also reflects a strategic pivot that worked. Selling software tools for labeling was a crowded, commoditizing market; selling the actual data — with a hybrid of synthetic generation and human expert oversight — captures more of the value chain and is harder to undercut. The shift from tooling to a data service is the reason the numbers are this dramatic, and it positions Snorkel as a critical supplier in the AI supply chain rather than a peripheral vendor.
The Caveat
The gross-revenue optics deserve a skeptical eye. As TechCrunch notes, these data companies pay out roughly 60% to 70% of top-line income directly to the domain specialists doing the work — which means their actual net revenue is substantially lower than the headline run rates suggest. A $375 million run rate looks impressive, but a large slice flows straight back out to contractors. That makes these businesses closer to labor-driven marketplaces with an AI veneer than pure software companies, and it raises questions about how durable the economics are if the human labor component gets automated away or if competition compresses margins. The boom is real, but the unit economics under the boom are thinner than the valuations imply — worth watching when the AI capex cycle inevitably tightens.
