ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork: The Enterprise AI Agent Showdown

The Pitch

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work this month, powered by GPT-5.6. Anthropic's Claude Cowork has been in market since early 2026. Both products promise the same thing: an autonomous AI agent that integrates with enterprise tools, handles routine tasks, schedules meetings, drafts emails, analyses data, and generally acts as a digital employee that never sleeps, never complains, and never asks for a raise.

The pitch is compelling. The reality is complicated. And the differences between the two approaches reveal a philosophical split in how AI companies think about enterprise automation.

The Products

ChatGPT Work is aggressively autonomous. It connects to Slack, Gmail, Google Calendar, Salesforce, and a growing list of enterprise tools through an integration layer that OpenAI built itself. The agent can initiate actions — send messages, schedule meetings, update records — without human approval for routine tasks. Human review is required for "high-stakes" actions, though the definition of "high-stakes" is configurable and, in practice, often set to permissive defaults by busy administrators.

Claude Cowork is more conservative. Anthropic built it around a "human-in-the-loop" architecture where the agent proposes actions but does not execute them without explicit approval. The integration layer is more limited — fewer connectors, more reliance on existing enterprise automation tools like Zapier and Make. The result is slower but, Anthropic argues, more trustworthy.

The Analysis

The split reflects deeper disagreements about AI safety and enterprise readiness. OpenAI is betting that speed and convenience will drive adoption, and that the risks of autonomous action are manageable with the right guardrails. Anthropic is betting that enterprises are more risk-averse than enthusiastic, and that a slower, more transparent agent will win in the long run by building trust.

Early adoption data is mixed. ChatGPT Work has more signups. Claude Cowork has better retention among enterprise customers. The customers that choose ChatGPT Work tend to be smaller, faster-moving companies that prioritise efficiency over caution. The customers that choose Claude Cowork tend to be larger, more regulated organisations that cannot afford high-profile AI failures.

Both approaches have failure modes. ChatGPT Work's autonomy has already produced incidents — meetings scheduled for wrong times, emails sent to wrong recipients, data entered into wrong fields. None catastrophic, but each one erodes trust. Claude Cowork's conservatism has produced frustration — users complaining that the agent "doesn't actually do anything," that they spend more time approving actions than they would spend doing them manually.

The Verdict

Neither product is ready to replace a human employee. Both are useful for specific tasks in specific contexts. The question is which failure mode enterprises prefer: the risk of an agent that does the wrong thing quickly, or the frustration of an agent that does the right thing slowly.

The long-term winner will likely be whichever company solves the trust problem first. Autonomy without trust is a liability. Trust without autonomy is a fancy chatbot. The product that threads that needle — giving users confidence that the agent will act correctly while actually acting on their behalf — will dominate enterprise AI.

Right now, neither company has threaded it. ChatGPT Work has the autonomy. Claude Cowork has the trust architecture. The race is on to build something that has both.
