Article 314: Claude Duet Flips the Conversation. Now the Assistant Messages You First
Anthropic has opened a waitlist for Claude Duet, a research preview of a proactive assistant built on Claude Opus 5.5. It sends a morning brief, drafts next steps and keeps working on tasks while you are away, running on its own computer in the cloud using the apps you connect.
Availability is narrow by design: waitlist only, limited to Pro and Max subscribers in the US, on iOS, Android and claude.ai. Anthropic's page states that Team and Enterprise plans "are not included yet." The product page claims support for more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, and carries over your Claude memory, skills and connected apps into a single message thread. The guardrail Anthropic leads with is that Duet "asks you before sensitive operations like sending messages or paying."
The cost structure is the part worth reading twice. Duet shares your plan's usage limits with the rest of Claude, and its background checks count against them. Bigger jobs - a financial model, a deck - burn more turns. Engadget reports that Duet checks connected accounts every few hours rather than continuously, precisely for that reason. An always-on assistant and your afternoon coding session now draw from the same pool.
Anthropic is also unusually direct about failure modes: the page warns Duet "may misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent," and that it can miss things arriving between check-ins. No price beyond the plan and no general availability date are listed. Engadget reports Pro subscribers at $20 a month will get Duet at GA, against OpenAI's Dots at its $100 Pro tier.
Key Takeaway: Changing who speaks first changes what the product is. A chatbot is a tool you summon; a proactive agent is a filter that decides, unprompted, what deserves your attention - and Anthropic is admitting in writing that it will sometimes get that wrong. The interesting consequence is that the usage-limit question becomes a pricing question nobody has answered yet. When background checks burn the same quota as foreground work, the assistant that is useful because it runs constantly is the one that makes your paid plan feel smaller. Every proactive-agent vendor will hit this wall: the value scales with monitoring frequency, and the cost scales with it too. Anthropic has chosen to throttle frequency rather than invent a separate billing line, which is the conservative choice and probably the right one for a preview. The real test is not the morning brief, it is whether it learns which forty emails to leave alone. Until Duet can demo restraint rather than capability, "proactive" is a marketing word for "scheduled."
