Pocket FM Doubles Revenue to $500M as AI Powers 93% of Its Audio Catalog
The Indian audio platform turned to AI to make production 80x cheaper — and humans to make it last 100 years

The economics of scale flipped
Pocket FM, the Indian audio storytelling platform, says it has doubled its annualized revenue run rate to $500 million over the past year — and the engine of that growth is AI. AI now powers 93% of its catalog and roughly 99% of its new content, according to co-founder and CEO Rohan Nayak. The technology made production about 80x cheaper: what used to take a year to make (100 hours of content) can now be produced in a day.
The scale explosion is stark. Its more than 550,000 creators are now producing about 2.5 million hours of AI-powered content a year. Two years ago, the entire catalog was roughly 100,000 hours; today the platform holds a library of more than 770,000 audio series. That is a volume change, not a margin tweak — and it is only possible because the marginal cost of producing finished audio collapsed.
The human-shaped caveat
The nuance is where Pocket FM gets interesting, because the company is not claiming AI replaced storytelling — it claims AI replaced the expensive grind of turning stories into finished audio. "We want to create great IPs that last 100 years, and that needs humans," Nayak told TechCrunch. The company still leans on human creators for ideas and narrative, then uses AI to scale those concepts into finished content. AI head Vasu Sharma, a former Meta and Tesla scientist, said Pocket FM trained its own models for creative writing and text-to-speech on years of production data and listener-engagement signals.
That division of labor matters. Pocket FM is positioning AI as the tooling wrapped around a creative process, not the autonomous generator. The economics reward the AI piece (80x cheaper, 365x more content output), but the branding and the long-term IP strategy are betting on the human piece. It is a deliberate straddle: scale your cheaply as possible, stake your durable franchises on people.
A template for the content industry
Pocket FM is now one of the clearest working examples of how AI reshapes a content business without replacing its creators outright. The playbook: keep humans on the high-value ideas and taste-setting, hand the mechanical production to models, and let volume become the growth lever. The open question is whether the "100-year IP" bet survives when 93% of what is on the platform is machine-produced — whether audiences, and critically the human creators whose stories anchor the top of the funnel, remain the differentiator Pocket FM hopes. If the answer is yes, this is the model for a dozen other verticals. If the economics quietly crowd out the humans anyway, it is the cautionary version of the same story.
