Nscale Chases $3.5B Pre-IPO as the Compute Arms Race Redraws European Tech

The British AI infrastructure firm, founded just two years ago, is reportedly raising $3.5 billion ahead of a possible IPO this month — with Nvidia supplying a meaningful chunk of the cash.

The deal

Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company founded just two years ago, has said it may go public as early as later this month. Ahead of that expected IPO, the company is reportedly in talks to raise an additional $3.5 billion. According to Bloomberg, Nscale is looking to sell $1.5 billion in convertible notes — a type of loan that can later convert into company stock — while also seeking an additional $2 billion in financing from Nvidia.

The pattern is familiar. Nvidia also participated in Nscale's Series B round in March, a $1.1 billion raise led by investment fund Aker, which Nscale hailed as the largest Series B in European history. Its Series A in December 2024 raised $155 million. The trajectory — from $155 million to $1.1 billion to billions more pre-IPO in under two years — is a measure of how central compute has become.

The context

Nscale recently signed a large deal with Anthropic worth approximately $45 billion. This week, reports emerged that Nscale had been telling potential investors it has approximately $103 billion in revenue following that deal — a figure that isn't current sales but a projection based on signed customer leases, according to The Information. That gap between projected and realized revenue is worth watching as the company approaches a public listing.

The broader dynamic is the AI arms race playing out in infrastructure. AI infrastructure startups have seen immense growth as compute has become a competitive currency. Whoever controls the chips controls the timeline of the models built on top of them.

Why it matters

Nscale's rise is a story about how the center of gravity in AI is shifting. Europe has long been seen as a consumer of American AI rather than a producer of its own compute infrastructure. A British company raising billions, signing a $45 billion deal with Anthropic, and courting Nvidia as both investor and supplier flips that script — at least for one firm.

But Nscale also illustrates the froth in the market. A two-year-old company projecting $103 billion in revenue off signed leases, raising $3.5 billion before a single public earnings report, signals how much of the current boom is priced on future expectations rather than present performance. When Nvidia is simultaneously the dominant GPU seller, a major customer's supplier, and an investor in that customer's competitors, the entanglement deserves scrutiny. The IPO will test whether the projected reality holds up under the glare of public markets.
